NSW HISTORY COMPETITION

The NSW History Competition tests historical knowledge & skills relevant to the Stage 5 History Syllabus. It contains 50 multiple choice items, and will only be drawn from the COMPULSORY sections of the syllabus. The Competition does not attempt to replicate the NSW School Certificate Test in Australian History, Civics and Citizenship in any way.

2010 Competition
The NSW History Competition is set down to be administered in schools on Term 3 Week 7, 2010.

2009 Competition Results
The competition was administered in schools in Term 3 Week 7 (7-11 September 2009).
In 2009, 151 schools were registered, equating to 13,196 students sitting the competition. The highest mark achieved was 48 out of 50.

Congratulations to Ian Pan from Hurlstone Agricultural High School
for achieving the highest mark of 48 out of 50 in the 2009 NSW History Competition.

The 2009 Competition Merit Category cut-off marks are as follows:

CREDIT - 29 to 33 out of 50 (or 58-66%). This range represents the top 38% of the candidature.
DISTINCTION - 34 to 38 out of 50 (or 68-76%). This range represents the top 16% of the candidature.
HIGH DISTINCTION - 39+ out of 50 (or 78% plus). This represents the top 4% of the candidature.

Competition will be mailed out on 23 October 2009

AUSTRALIAN HISTORICAL INVESTIGATION COMPETITION

1st - $300, 2nd - $200, 3rd - $100
HTANSW In conjunction with the Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority are pleased to announce the launch of the 2010 Australian Historical Investigation Competition for Year 8, 9, 10 and 11 students from NSW schools.

This innovative competition is designed to encourage students to undertake research on issues relating to history and/or archaeology of Australia, and in particular The Rocks.

EXTENSION HISTORY ESSAY PRIZE

1st - $500, 2nd - $300, 3rd - $200
The Extension History Essay Prize is open to essays that:
• Satisfy the requirements of the NSW HSC Extension Project
• Are the product of genuine research
• Represent ‘interesting and well written history’

Special Category - 'Generation to Generation'
1st - $300, 2nd - $150
In addition to the above prizes the Sydney Jewish Museum is offering a prize for essays on the topic of Holocaust history and/or the related area of genocide studies.
NOTE: Essays eligible for this Special Category will be selected by the judging panel from essays entered in the HTA NSW Extension Essay Prize.

Please note - the Extension Essay Prize has no link with the NSW HSC exam. There will be no attempt to anticipate a student’s performance in this exam.

SIMPSON ESSAY PRIZE

The Simpson Prize Essay is funded by the Commonwealth Department of Education, Science and Training and hosted by the History Teachers’ Association of Australia, in conjunction with its state affiliates. The competition winner will win a trip to attend the Anzac Day dawn service at Gallipoli or the Western Front.

2011 Simpson Prize Question

"Has the ANZAC legend changed over 95 years?"
You should support your view with reference to at least 2 different periods of Australian history.

Closing date for NSW & ACT school entries is 3rd December 2010
NOTE: FAXED entries WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED

Maximum of 3 entries per school, and 3 copies of each entry to be submitted to the HTA NSW Office.
Official 'cover sheet' must accompany each entry.
A teacher from each state will also be required to accompany the winning students as a chaperone.

NOTE: Please ONLY send applications from NSW & ACT schools to HTANSW.
Other schools please contact your own state HTA.

NATIONAL HISTORY CHALLENGE

2010 Theme - "Celebrations, Memories & History"
The National History Challenge is a research-based competition for students.
It gives students a chance to be an historian, investigating their community and exploring their own past. It emphasises and rewards quality research, the use of community resources and effective presentation.
Students from years 5 to 12 submit their research at school level and can progress through Regional, State and National finals.

The National History Challenge demonstrates the quality of work which is being produced in our Primary and Secondary schools and testifies to the importance and value of understanding our own past. Congratulations to both the NSW and National Winners on their efforts and contribution to the 2009 National History Challenge. We look forward to an equally high standard of research and investigation in 2010.
